Design and Technology

The Principles & Purpose of the Design & Technology Curriculum

Design and Technology at Accrington Academy is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. In Design Technology we strive for pupils to work independently with confidence when learning skills progressively throughout the years at Accrington Academy. We can prepare pupils for life beyond the classroom with a wide selection of subjects to develop all wants and needs of the pupils.
Here we explore these principles in the context of the Design Technology curriculum:

Entitlement:

All pupils will experience a wide variety of subject areas within Design Technology to develop their understanding. In addition, they will be able to identify and solve their own design problems and understand how to reformulate problems given to them

Coherence:

The curriculum has been devised to develop pupil’s knowledge through scaffolding of research and design exploration through a variety of different skill eventualities.

Mastery:

We want our pupils to be able to research, design and make products independently and link taught knowledge. Concepts in Design Technology are regularly revisited to check on understanding and develop future planning to the needs of the pupils. The engagement and retention of knowledge is a priority within Design Technology.

Adaptability:

Each lesson focuses on a new piece of knowledge and skill with assessment throughout so that lessons can be adapted for gaps in understanding. Teachers have individually developed the curriculums to adhere to a variety of different cohorts to support their learning journey and evolve their creativeness within the subject.

Representation:

Design Technology ensures that the subject is accessible to all students.

Education with character:

Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising, and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.
