Applying to Accrington Academy

The academy admissions policy places great emphasis upon family values and equity.

The Academy Admissions Policy places great emphasis upon family values and equity. The criteria for receiving a place at the Academy are as follows – those children who have a brother or sister at the Academy are guaranteed a place, followed by other children based on distance between home and the Academy. There is no selection by either ability or by aptitude for the pecialisms (mathematics and sport).
The only children who merit absolute priority are in priority order):
• Children in public care (Looked After Children)
• Those with a Statement of Special Educational
• Needs which names Accrington Academy
• Children for whom it is essential that they beadmitted because of special  circumstances related to medical and social needs

All places at Accrington Academy are free of charge and open to students of all abilities and all faiths or none.


Admissions Criteria - Year 7

The admissions limit at Accrington Academy is 180.

There the number of applications for admissions is greater than the published admissions number, applications will be considered against the criteria set out below. The criteria will be applied in the following order:

• Children who are ‘looked after’ under the provision of the Children Act 1989
• Children with significant specific medical, social or special educational needs supported by written specific professional advice
• Children with siblings at the Academy
• Children who live the nearest distance from the Academy

As with all other schools, students with a relevant statement of special educational need will be seen as a priority in terms of admission to the Academy.

If you would like to apply for a place in Year 7 at Accrington Academy, parents must complete the Common Application Form published by Lancashire County Council. Forms can be obtained from your child’s primary school or from the council offices. Applications should be returned to the address on the Common Application Form by the time stated. Parents will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application.


Waiting List and Appeals Process
If you are unsuccessful in being allocated a place at Accrington Academy you will be placed on our waiting list. This list is ranked according to the same criteria as those used for admissions. You will be asked to notify us that you wish to be held on this list and will be contacted directly once a place is available. You may appeal against our decision not to offer you a place and must do so in writing to the admissions officer within 14 days of being notified that you have not been offered a place. An independent appeal panel will hear your appeal. A copy of the appeals procedure is available from the Academy reception office.
