An innovative curriculum

Comm_InnovativeCurriculum

Accrington Academy prides itself on offering an engaging, inspiring and innovative curriculum which equips students with the skills and qualifications they need to make a success of their lives.

We teach a broad and balanced range of subjects including all the key areas of the National Curriculum.  Students receive an all-round education and are encouraged to pay particular attention to the core skills of English, mathematics and ICT. We are also keen to ensure that students receive an education appropriate to their abilities rather than their age. This means accelerating the more able students and giving extra support to those who need it.

All academies have a Specialism.  At Accrington Academy, we have two - Mathematics and Sport, supported by the themes of Business and Enterprise and ICTCreative and media activities also feature prominently within the curriculum. These Specialisms reflect the needs and interests of our students and the employment prospects in the area.  They help students develop key skills such as problem-solving, creativity and self-confidence, which will help them succeed in all their subjects, as well as in life beyond school.

The academy places particular emphasis on the development of literacy skills.  Reading is one of the ways that all students can improve their own level of success.  It helps them:

  • Increase their vocabulary
  • Improve their writing skills
  • Learn new ideas
  • Engage in creative thinking and reflection.

We have a wide range of reading books which students are encouraged to use.
